PostSubject: Grissini & Melba Alternatives   Mon May 12 2008, 23:13

Hi! Could someone please tell me what I can have as an alternative to grissini & melba toast please???

I have looked all over and could not find them. They even pointed me to this toasted bread called "Crostini" which is like a toasted mini baguette bread from whole foods but I'm not sure if I could eat this in replacement of grissini.

Does anyone know if "Crostini" have similar ingredients as Grissini??

Also, I found Melba snacks (light snacks crisps) but not Melba toast & I'm not sure if they're the same because toast to me sounds more like a bread.

The Crostini that I bought contains the following ingredients: Organic wheat flour, water, sea salt, yeast, organic garlic, organic rosemary, organic olive oil, dusting flour, organic sesame seeds, organic poppy seeds, organic anise.

Please help!!!

Why oh, why must we all be looking or 'alternatives'???????????????? Did you look in "Foodstuffs"? There is likely a thread on it.

Many who don't like them, just leave them off.

Funny thing is........ once I tried it w/the fruit.. it was really, actually kind of nice. Especially w/nice juicy fruit.

TRY it.... you may be surprised. I have used the little 'round' Melbas. About three to a meal. (Blue and white box; and yes, I believe they are called 'snacks'. Just be careful you don't get the flavored ones.)

You will probably find that leaving them out of your diet you will lose better, too.

Still no luck finding grissini though.

Try adding just a little protein to your diet. Take out one fruit and replace it with protein. If you have a little chicken cooked up or a little container of cooked shrimp you can pull out a couple of bites when hunger strikes. It satisfies hunger better and longer and your body uses it differently than the carbs in melba or grissini. And by taking out one fruit or even just half a fruit, you are still staying within your 500 cal limit and get more satisfying foods.

Michelle ~ I'm a newbie and I don't know that my advice is sound, but this is what I did.
I was able to find 3 different 'crackers' that contain no processed white flour and have no added fat/oil.
I found them in the regular grocery stores and 1 of them in my health food store.

Wasa Multi Grain Crispbread. 1 slice = 45 calories. Made with 100% whole grain.
I break these in half and eat half at a time. 1 total cracker per day (most days I have only half)
These were found in the grocery store.

Bran-a-crisp. 1 cracker = 20 calories.
Ingredients: wheat bran, rye flour
Imported from Norway. I got these at the HFS.
Haven't tried these yet, just got them yesterday.
I will eat 1-2 a day.

Finn Crisp - original taste. 1 cracker = 20 calories.
Ingredients: whole grain rye flour, water, yeast and salt.
Grocery store and HFS. I'll eat 1-2 per day.

If this info in incorrect, please don't hesitate to respond. I don't want to side track anyone! *Ü*

Hi Denise ~ Will you please post the calories? I too haven't been able to find what Dr. S recommends, so I don't know the calorie count that I want to duplicate. Thanks! *Ü*

If you have a Winco grocery store in your area they carry melba toast for less than $2.oo a box. I found Grissini in the bakery sectin of my local whole foods, but they are quite pricy like $7 for one package. 5 Melba snacks have 90 colories. I can't recall the calories in the Grissini.

I found grissini at Whole Foods, but it was $5.99 there, I'd make a visit to the dollar store first as Harmony suggested.

Hi ~ I would like to know the calorie count of what Dr. S says we can have for the Melba or grissini.

I'm using whole grain, no fat added crackers, but I don't know how many calories these equate to what Dr. S says we can have.

Thanks! *Ü*

I usually don't use the melba's because they slow down my losses, BUT, the times I have used them, I figure out my day with proteins first, then fruits, then veggies. I rarely go much over 400-450 cal. Then I use some or the rest of the calories for melbas.

Hi Grammasmitty ~ I received an electronic food scale on Mother's Day and I've been having fun with it!

I'll be honest, I hadn't counted calories before that... but I am now. And I agree - by the time I factor in my protein, veggies and fruit - it typically doesn't leave me much room for the cracker(s). *Ü*
